Price To Buy 12 Days Of Christmas Items Rises In 2019: PNC - Pittsburgh, PA Patch

PITTSBURGH, PA - President Trump's tariff policy apparently didn't significantly impact the price to purchase all of the items in the "The 12 Days of Christmas." Pittsburgh-based PNC, which annually calculates the cost to buy everything in the classic holiday song, says the price increased only by a nominal 0.2 percent over 2018.

That's the good news. The bad news is that if you want to truly impress your true love over those 12 days, you'll need to shell out $38,993.59.

"Despite the stock market hitting record highs recently, it is a welcome gift for the holidays that the PNC Christmas Price Index stayed relatively flat this year," Amanda Agati, chief investment strategist for PNC Asset Management Group, said in a statement. "However, the scrooges of the season are the gold rings which saw the biggest year-over-year price increase in the index, and prices for some of our fowl friends which are truly foul."

A breakdown of this year's "12 Days" costs, which PNC dubs the Christmas Price Index:

  • 12 drummers drumming: $2,972.25, a 0.8 percent increase that PNC attributes to a bump in the cost of hiring musicians.
  • 11 pipers piping: $2,748,87, a 0.8 increase for the same reason as the drummers.
  • 10 lords-a-leaping: $10,000, the same cost as last year as ballet companies kept prices flat.
  • 9 ladies dancing: $7,552, a bargain considering the ladies have gone seven consecutive years without a price increase.
  • 8 maids-a-milking: $58 for the 10th straight year as the cost is tied to the minimum wage.
  • 7 swans-a-swimming: $13,125, an expensive price but one unchanged for the past five years.
  • 6 geese-a-laying: $420, a 7 percent increase over 2018. PNC doesn't say why.
  • 5 golden rings: $825, a 10 percent increased attributed to the surging price of gold this year.
  • 4 calling birds: $599.96, the same as last year thanks to unlimited minutes.
  • 3 French hens: $181.50, making them by far the most affordable birds in the index.
  • 2 turtle doves: $300, a 20 percent drop from 2018. Although PNC accurately named it he most volatile gift in this year's index, it didn't provide a reason for the decrease.
  • A partridge in a pear tree: $210.17, a 4.5 percent decline from last year, which PNC attributed to a slight drop in pear tree prices.
