Jets singing familiar tune for season finale with Bills - New York Post

ORCHARD PARK — The Jets and Bills lined up against each other 16 weeks ago in Week 1 of the season, both hopeful they could be playoff teams behind their second-year quarterbacks.

When they meet Sunday, one team will be preparing for the playoffs and the other team will be playing out the string.

The Bills beat the Jets 17-16 in Week 1 and have not looked back. Buffalo is 10-5 and has the No. 5 seed in the AFC playoffs secured. The Jets are 6-9 and will be watching the playoffs for the ninth straight year.

“You always want to be playing another week,” Jets coach Adam Gase said this week. “That’s the toughest part about this week, you always want to play another week, you want to get a chance to get in the tournament and then see what happens because once you get in there, anything can happen. You’ve seen teams over the last decade or so that you get surprised when they kind of make a run. But, we just didn’t start out fast enough. Whatever reason that is, it’s irrelevant. We’ve played better here in the back half of the season.”

The Jets have bounced back from a 1-7 start to the season to go 5-2 in the second half of the year. Though the Bills have nothing to play for Sunday and probably will pull their starters at some point in the game, the Jets are treating this like a playoff game.

“It’s definitely something we can build off of,” running back Le’Veon Bell said. “You see the guys we’re doing it with. That will give us I think a little momentum heading into next year. We got off to a shaky start this season. We want to make sure we win this last game. I don’t want to talk about next year. This next one coming up, we want to get the ‘W.’ We know that’s a good football team.”

There is debate about whether there is carry-over from the way a team ends a season into the next one, but ending the year with a win beats the alternative. The Jets know that changes to this roster are coming in 2020 and want to go out with a win in 2019.

“This is the last time this particular team of Jets will be together,” linebacker Brandon Copeland said. “You want to make sure that’s a great plane ride home.”
