Dover 100-year-old says keep singing and dancing - Foster's Daily Democrat

DOVER — In all of her 100 years, Elsie Hall hasn't spent time worrying about what people think.

"She has never been afraid to get up and dance or sing in front of people, never in her life. There is not a shy bone in her body," said Linda William, Hall’s daughter.

Hall, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday at Dover Center for Health and Rehabilitation, is a woman of many interests, and her lively passions may play a part in what makes her so lively at the age of 100.

"Oh, I’ve always got a lot of exercise. I loved any kind of dancing, rollerskating, and swimming. I was always on the go, a little hyperactive," said Hall.

Hall was born in South Portland, Maine, and grew up in Sanford, Maine. She attended Sanford High School and married her late husband Edward W. Hall in May of 1939, when she was 19 years old. Hall and her late husband lived in the Dover and Rochester area for most of their lives.

Hall worked for Spaulding Fiber Co. in Milton for 15 years, as well as working for Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester for nine years. She also worked for the Sanford mills in her early adulthood. Hall stated working for Frisbie was her favorite job.

Hall claims her hard work ethic is one characteristic of many that has helped her stay active.

"I worked until I was 70 years old. I was never lazy," Hall said.

Throughout her 100 years, Hall has filled much of her leisure time with her family and hobbies like baking, cooking, sewing and shopping, as well as dancing, singing and travelling with the Dover Senior Club.

Singing and dancing have always been her favorite hobbies. Her husband Edward loved to dance as well, and the couple would often go ballroom dancing at the Rockingham Ballroom in Newmarket. Hall said her favorite styles of dance were ballroom and the foxtrot.

"I remember being in the dance halls a lot when I was younger. Who didn’t I dance with?" Hall jokingly said.

Hall shared he love of dance with her father, as well as singing. She said they came naturally to her.

Hall’s other passions brought her to locations like Myrtle Beach, Hawaii, Sicily, and New York City, with the Dover Seniors Club. Hall loved to bake blueberry and apple pies from scratch, along with making fudge that William called "perfect." Hall used to be an avid shopper, too, and has always loved getting dressed up, according to William.

Hall stated one of her proudest moments was learning how to drive and receiving her driver’s license at the age of 70, after her husband passed away in 1990.

Hall emphasized the importance of spending time with her family as some of her greatest memories of the last 100 years.

"I loved taking trips to Florida with my siblings. My four sisters, two brothers and I went to Daytona Beach once a year for 10 years. I loved my brother’s big pool in Scarborough, too," said Hall.

Hall has three children, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She also has one sister who is 90 years old.

Hall has lived at the Dover Center for Health and Rehab for a little more than two years, and still enjoys activities such as Bingo, Sunday services, singing, music, and getting up to dance.

"I’ve had some good times in my life. My secret to a long life is to get up, get moving, and keep on singing and dancing," she said.
